Base Braids

Creating a canvas full of potential.

I like to braid up to a certain point and use that braid to create several different hairstyles. This is something I refer to as a canvas.

canvasThis is a nine-strand single braid with accent strands left out and the tail is sectioned out into accent strands. Once it gets to this point anything can be done with the accent strands. Dozens of possibilities are available only limited by your imagination.

A and B how toToday I will show you the rope and loose style. Use the accent strands to make a few mini rope accents. Loop the ropes in a pleasing manner and loop the loose hair around the ropes.

loops and ropesA nice dress for the client and pretty gems or jewels for the style complete the entire look. What will you do with the accent strands?

Feather Loose

Super loose braids can be super pretty.

Add a touch of elegance to your french braid today. Braid it as loose as you can to get that feathery feel. Tuck up the tail under the braid to finish off the look.

Teardrop Form

The teardrop is a great hairstyle easily changeable.

The easiest change is the accents you may add to it. You may also work the placement of the form. Feel free to place it further back or kiltered sideways.

Blue TeardropDSC_71814It does not matter which strand number you use to create the teardrop form. The number of strands used will alter the look and feel of the hairstyle. Use the number of strands most familiar to you when you are first learning the form. Most people use three strands.

Fringe Form

The fringe form is fun to utilize in hairstyles.

The one trick I want to emphasize would be to start behind the front section. Two braids criss cross in front going opposite directions across the top of the head. Start with the second one. The section behind the forefront section.

Strand Numbers

Why is it important to know how to braid with a variety of strand numbers?

It isn’t. Things that are important are food, shelter, clothing, and education. However, if you want the ability to change a single hairstyle into many…knowing different strand number braid patterns will make that so easy. Here is a collage of Teardrops. Each teardrop is done with a different strand number braid pattern. They are all one form: Teardrop. They look completely different because they are done with a different number of strands. So, knowing how to do other numbers can increase your ability to change hairstyles even if you only know one hairstyle. Just do that hairstyle with a different strand number each day. Youtube has so many how-to videos on different strand numbers. Find a teacher you resonate with and learn a pattern today!
