Creating Hairstyles

Even the most creative people run out of good ideas for new hairstyles. Here is your access to endless styling possibilities.

blog wheelAssembled, this is a wheel that has four layers. Each layer spins. It points out hairstyles for you to make. Let’s break it down.

blog strandsThe outer most layer suggests braid patterns. Line up one of the strand numbers with the next layer. For this example I am going with the most traditional strand number known. The three-strand.

accent varietyNext, I have to choose an accent to go with my three-strand braid. I have chosen a mini two-strand braid. I use the nickname “chain” because it looks like a chain when it is done.

Forms chartFinally, I need to pick out a form to create with my three-strand braid. Again, I am going with the most commonly used braid form…the single.

The fourth wheel on the Braider Creator is basic/cascade. I am going with basic today to get all the hair up. Tomorrow I will do the same hairstyle only leaving down half the hair making it a cascade hairstyle.

puzzle peicesPut all three components together and I get the final results. A three-strand single braid with mini chain accents. Thanks for walking through this with me.

Strand Numbers

Why is it important to know how to braid with a variety of strand numbers?

It isn’t. Things that are important are food, shelter, clothing, and education. However, if you want the ability to change a single hairstyle into many…knowing different strand number braid patterns will make that so easy. Here is a collage of Teardrops. Each teardrop is done with a different strand number braid pattern. They are all one form: Teardrop. They look completely different because they are done with a different number of strands. So, knowing how to do other numbers can increase your ability to change hairstyles even if you only know one hairstyle. Just do that hairstyle with a different strand number each day. Youtube has so many how-to videos on different strand numbers. Find a teacher you resonate with and learn a pattern today!

Those Wisps We “Love”

Frustrated with the wisps that won’t stay in the braid?

Do you use a jar of gel and a can of hairspray to try to keep wisps in a braid, and as soon as you sneeze they come flying out? Try this simple technique to maintain a sweet hairstyle without the wisps.

11990449_426676227536363_6101104328518359620_nDo a cornrow at the hairline to get in all those little hairs. Then start your regular hairstyle. In this case it is a Headband form. Without the cornrow this style would only last one day due to wisp escapage. Now, she can keep this for three days. A light mist of hairspray gives it just the right staying power.

12800177_485008531703132_8950891470640530768_nAs you can see it works great with any hairstyle you usually do. Even Pigtails!!! Give it a try today with the hairstyle you already planned on doing. You will be surprised how great it works.

Pigtail Braids

Are you making the same pigtail braids you have always made?

The double form is so versatile. Add accents to create unique hairstyles. It doesn’t take much to change the way a double braid looks and to give it an elegant look for a special occasion.

double variety  The  three-strand double form is one intersection on this chart. Yet it has so many options for hairstyling creations when you start adding accents. Find the three-strand slot on top of the chart. Find doubles on the side of the chart. Follow them to the three-strand double photo. That one intersection has hundreds of possibilities for hairstyles. Hopefully, the few I showed above give you an idea of where to begin in getting your imagination warmed up.

When daughters start to braid

It will be no surprise that my daughters also like to braid.

There are always a few braided mannequins on my desk, which stimulate my girls to practice and come up with new styles.

Teaching your own kids is more difficult than teaching someone you don’t know.

Most of the the time I ignore them when they are practicing on the mannequins (unless they ask for help) and just wait to see their results and take time to admire their work.

13501688_1089906701047379_4852884966260019482_nI help them when they ask me to, explain a creation, show a new braid or give some advice afterwards.

Of course there are always things I would do different if it was mine, but I try not to voice my vision very often. It is important to me that the girls develop their own creativity.

My eldest girl started a braid account on IG, a while ago.
Sometimes she makes a recreation of something she saw on the internet. But often she just start to braid without any plan.
Those are the creations I love the most.

She does things different than me. But I really admire her creativity, combinations and ideas.

13511979_1089906671047382_2874627217386188290_nHow much fun is it for me to do a recreation of one of her own creations on herself? (She looks close at my work offering advice afterwards.)
