Herringbone

The french herringbone braid pattern uses two strands. A tiny bit of hair is sectioned off and crossed over from each side. The two tiny sections make little “x”‘s all the way down as you section out, cross, section out a new one, cross…repeat all the way down.

Fishtails can be done Dutch

The fishtail is so beautiful.

A popular braid for good reason. It also tends to be a bit flimsy. As with all braid patterns, it is possible to dutch a fishtail. It is quite beautiful and more durable.

The photo shows it blossomed. That is when you pull and tug on the outside edges of the braid to make it wider and fuller. It adds so much extra beauty. The first time I saw a braid blossomed was in an instructional video by bebexo. She does amazing and easy hairstyles.

Braiding the fishtail dutch takes some getting used to. Here is a video to help you get started. Don’t forget that youtube has millions of instructional videos. You can google “dutch fishtail” or type it in youtubes search bar. And don’t forget that practice makes perfect.

UPDO’S

Special Occasion Hairstyle

This hairstyle uses a braid to create an updo. Specifically, it uses a dutch fishtail to create a crown with a billow of hair piled on top for the elegant finish.

11351157_396695507201102_7768569629025519819_nThe nice thing about the fishtail being used…is that it doesn’t have to be a fishtail. You may use any number of strands to do the crown. If you only know the three-strand braid, then use that to make the crown and finish the center the same. Here is a link for a video showing how-to do this style.

If you want to see how it looks with a braid other than the fishtail I have posted a photo of the same updo using a seven-strand braid as the crown. The center bun is the same fluffy pile. Feel free to use any number of strand you wish to create the crown.

Fishtails

To add gathers or not?

The fishtail braid may be done with or without gathers. If you choose to add gathers you may add them so the braid is french or dutch. Both have a different look to them. One folds in, the other pops up. This video will show you how to do the french fishtail. Practice it until it feels familiar.

Once you understand the technique for creating this simple braid, use it to create beautiful hairstyles from your imagination. We would love to see photos of them. After taking a photograph of your fishtail, head over to our Facebook group and post your photo for us to see.
