Strand Number Options

How many strands do you braid with?

I like to use as many as nine-strands when I braid. Each number creates an interesting pattern. Different patterns can be created using the same number of strands. Take the three-strand braid. There are lots of patterns to be made using three-strands. The same is true with all the strand numbers. Braids using one-strand have many options. The same is true for nine-strands. Here are a few common patters using different numbers of strands.

Why lace a braid?

Has someone told you to lace your braid?

What does that mean? How is it performed? When is it done? Let’s ask the usual set of questions concerning lacing: who, what, where, how, why, and when? Yes, you should lace your braids sometimes.

Where, why, and when?

There are definitely times when a hairstyle looks more appropriate with a lace braid. Forms and shapes of a hairstyles can dictate where and when, like say, on a heart braid. Hearts can take on a more sophisticated look if they are laced so that the braid is able to cover the part-line creating the heart shape.

When a braid is not laced in this instance (photo above), the part-line is prominent. Even though it is still beautiful, it lacks a certain elegance. Lacing a heart covers the scalp line like the photo below.
