Heart Braid

There are four kinds of Heart Braids

Basic: The simplest is the basic heart. All the hair is incorporated in the form.

Accent: The accented heart uses strands of hair to add pretty accents to the style.

Cascade: The cascade heart leaves half the hair down to soften the look.

Accented Cascade: And finally, the accented cascade heart both leaves half the hair down and adds accents for beauty.

Combining Forms

Creativity is such a beautiful thing.

As your mind takes in new information and you sleep at night, your brain can mix stuff up as it sorts out where to put the new info. That is where some great hair styling ideas come from. If you get a great idea in your sleep…try it out the next day or the next time you get a chance. Even if you think it may not look as great in person as it did in your dream. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Here is a photo of two forms combined. A heart and the classic. What a sweet style.

Variations for Nine-Strand Hearts

Once again I have the chart showing forms and strand numbers. Today I am focusing on the nine-strand slot and the heart slot. Find the photo where they intersect. This could be a book all to itself. Accents change each hairstyle you make on a nine-strand heart.  Given the scope of accents out there people employ when coming up with new hairstyles, the choices are endless for what you can put together just using this chart.

nine heart varietyI could show a hundred more, but that would make a very long blog post. I write how-to books on braiding and I can make a book for each intersection on this chart. I am going to be busy for a long time.

Sweet Hearts

Heart braids require symmetry.

Sometimes I have to do one side again in order to get it to match the opposite side. It is far too easy to have a lopsided heart.  Don’t be afraid to take a side out and redo it if you are unhappy with the way it looks. It is better to do a side twice than taking the entire thing out and giving up. Don’t give up. Practice, practice, practice.

HEART FORM

Heart braids are so pretty. The placement of the braid is versatile. It can be placed forward, further back, diagonal, sideways, or upside down. I like to encourage diversity. If you learn a single way to do it and everyone else does as well…the world would all have the same hairstyle. So, get out there and make something new and different with what you learn here today. Get creative and make up a hairstyle.

heart gemThe heart form can be done with any number of strands. What ever braid patterns you know, can be used to create a heart shape.

Blue HeartThe tutorial below is taken from my book A Different Approach to Hairbraiding. It gives the basic idea how to place a heart shape on the head. Use any strand number you wish.
