Full Braids

It is common to see tight braids.

The trend today is leaning towards thicker fuller braids. So, how wide and thick can a braid be done? It is fun to experiment to see. It can be cool to see how pretty it looks once it’s done. Here is an example of a tight braid. It is wider than a three-strand. It is done using five-strands.

tight fiveNow, let’s show an even wider style made with a couple braids clipped together with a barrette. This is a soft and flowing braid style.

Defying all logic

Meet Red Vzla

She is an incredible braider and has her own youtube channel.

She frequently defies logic when she braids.

Take this french braid for example:

12472759_982766101810067_4008545377876779437_nIt looks like a dutch braid that has been blossomed for effect. To add to the confusion, the gathers go under before they are added to a strand to go over. It is the type of pattern that can drive you mad if you are learning the differences in terminology in the braid world. It is also the exact reason we need the terminology and why those definitions really matter. So that when people like her, Mirjam, and I get together, we can talk, braid geek talk, at full speed ahead using proper words to describe intricate steps and understand each other (without photos) to get the idea across.

So, why is this a french braid? The outside strand goes over the middle strand. That is what makes a braid french or not. Deep in the geek speech…know that when I use the word “middle strand” I actually mean the next strand in. This is a three-strand braid, so I used the word middle strand even though the reality is…the outside strand goes over the next strand in.

Here is her video tutorial for how to create this unique pattern for a french braid. Enjoy!
